Welcome

In 1998, a mandatory yearly field experience trip to Orizaba, Mexico was added to the program. The 'Mexico Experience' had already been established by Southern University foreign language departments, but this was the first time it would be utilized by Architecture students. The main goal of the program was to serve as first-hand experience in beginning discussions about culture and community. The goal is to make the Mexico Progam an annual occurance.

Students conducted a visual survey of Mexican architectural elements within the three-week duration. The survey included the language, syntax, patterns, rhythm and grammar of local religious structures. The goal for the design studio was to develop a design proposal for a religious building (Church), depicting the field observations. The students then spent one week at Southern University in Baton Rouge, compiling graphic data produced in Mexico, documenting elements from the visual survey, completing the design proposals and finalizing their portfolios .
