Thurman teaches Structures.
At age 21 Thurman joined the Southern University Division of Industrial and Technical Education Faculty in 1948, teaching courses in Drafting, Surveying, History of Architecture and Engineering Mechanics. While on a leave of absence from Southern in 1952 - 1953, he served as a Clerk of the Works during the construction of the Harkness Hall, dormitory at Hampton Institute. He returned to Southern in 1953 as Director of the Division of Industrial and Technical Education. In 1956 degree programs in Architectural, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering were first offered at Southern University with Henry Thurman as Southern's first Dean of Engineering and Architecture. He became Dean Emeritus in 1972 but remained a member of the faculty serving as Professor of Architecture, teaching structural design, and was Director of the Division of Architecture from 1978-1981. Served as Interim Dean of the Southern University School of Architecture from 1990 to 1992 and currently teaches structural design part-time.
Since 1956 he has been the President and Principal in Hunt-Thurman Associates, an Architectural Corporation in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Member, American Institute of Architects, Louisiana Architects Association, National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, and past member of American Society for Engineering Education.
